Straightforward
By Austin
For what it is, this book is well written and very readable. It does an excellent job of condensing economic growth theory into an understandable textbook. However, it is missing a lot of nuance (and no endogenous growth theory!?). For a more complete perspective on development and growth economics, I'd recommend taking a look at a nuber of outside resources, such as "Poor Economics".

Excellent, not-too-technical overview of economic growth
By Sean Brocklebank
I read this book to get an overview of the topic (rather than as part of a course), and thought it was excellent.

If you are looking for a modern overview of economic growth, then perhaps the most important feature to consider is the technical level of the book. Weil's book is in the middle when it comes to the technical level, and is appropriate for people who already know at least a little bit of economics (e.g. supply & demand) and are comfortable with basic algebra (but not necessarily calculus, which only ever shows up in a handful of Weil's footnotes).

For those who want the least technical books, there are popular titles like "The Next Convergence" (by Spence) and "Why Nations Fail" (by Acemoglu & Robinson). These are written for a general audience and will involve no math and relatively few charts or graphs. They're easier to read than the more technical books listed below, but they also give a less complete picture of the field.

For those who want the most technical books, there are PhD-oriented texts like "Introduction to Modern Economic Growth" (also by Acemoglu) or "The Economics of Growth" (by Aghion & Howitt). These books have lots and lots of math and are well suited to people who want to be able to read or write growth papers on the research frontier, but you probably want to keep away from them unless you've already got a bit of experience working through calculus-laden econ texts.

Weil's book lies between these extremes, and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants some detail about the most important topics in economic growth without getting too bogged down. So what are these topics? Weil covers: capital accumulation, demographics, education, productivity, technology, efficiency, trade, government, inequality, culture, geography and natural resources, with at least a chapter for each (17 chapters total). Every chapter is full of good data, simple models, and clear explanations. It's exactly what a good undergraduate economics text should be, and it's probably the text I would use if I taught an undergraduate course in economic growth.

Through precise analysis of thirty examples of wastewater treatment plants located in different European countries and in the USA, the authors demonstrate the benefits of using water plants in the treatment of wastewater for all kinds of typologies and communities. The different examples are analysed from a functional angle and as an important element of consideration when planning landscape.

Stone Mattress: Nine Tales, by Margaret Atwood

A collection of highly imaginative short pieces that speak to our times with deadly accuracy. Vintage Atwood creativity, intelligence, and humor: think Alias Grace.

Margaret Atwood turns to short fiction for the first time since her 2006 collection, Moral Disorder, with nine tales of acute psychological insight and turbulent relationships bringing to mind her award-winning 1996 novel, Alias Grace. A recently widowed fantasy writer is guided through a stormy winter evening by the voice of her late husband in "Alphinland," the first of three loosely linked stories about the romantic geometries of a group of writers and artists. In "The Freeze-Dried Bridegroom," a man who bids on an auctioned storage space has a surprise. In "Lusus Naturae," a woman born with a genetic abnormality is mistaken for a vampire. In "Torching the Dusties," an elderly lady with Charles Bonnet syndrome comes to terms with the little people she keeps seeing, while a newly formed populist group gathers to burn down her retirement residence. And in "Stone Mattress," a long-ago crime is avenged in the Arctic via a 1.9 billion-year-old stromatolite. In these nine tales, Margaret Atwood is at the top of her darkly humorous and seriously playful game.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: “Stop trying to pimp me out to all these groupies,” a famous author and infamous cad utters in “Revenant,” one of three cleverly interconnected tales that begin Margaret Atwood’s superbly sardonic Stone Mattress. He is referring to an impending visit from an infatuated graduate student who is supposedly writing a thesis about his sonnets…which aren’t really sonnets (long story). Naveena—her name, he derisively but accurately points out, “sounds like cheese food slices. Or better—like a hair-removal cream”—is insufferable enough to be sure. The depiction makes yours truly nervous to be writing this review, but it’s all part of the fun, and these tales are fun, which is odd considering the sinister current that runs through many of them. But it’s as if the reader is privy to some sort of inside joke. This is especially evident in “The Dead Hand Loves You,” when Atwood playfully skewers the horror genre then gleefully indulges in it, and the ominously tongue-in-cheek “Torching the Dusties.” Fans of Margaret Atwood will certainly delight in this collection. But beware, the Stone Mattress will make groupies of old and new readers alike. –Erin Kodicek

A bit bumpy but Atwood is mostly in very fine form here
By Kcorn
If the rating system allowed, I'd give this one slightly more than 4 and 1/2 stars so I rounded up to 5 stars. I was drawn into most of these tales and I think this work is actually a fine introduction to Atwood's writing, her finely crafted sentences, and often otherworldly (or at least in between reality and surrealism) themes. She is also excellent when, at her best, she creates detailed portraits of individuals. They aren't always ones I'd like to know but are fascinating on the page.

I've had an ambivalent feeling about a fair number of Atwood's books. Some I've liked a great deal. Others left me cold. But I can absolutely recommend "Stone Mattress." It is one I'd be happy to reread.

While I liked - often loved- some of the tales in this book, there were a couple which weren't nearly as compelling as the rest. "Stone Mattress", the centerpiece of the book, focused on a woman bent on revenge and murder for a terrible injustice done her many years ago. Does she succeed? I won't disclose that, won't spoil it for potential readers. But I can say that I never thought I'd feel drawn to a possible murderess and feel compassion and understanding for her intense anger. I do want to add that some of the details in "Stone Mattress" are gruesome - so be aware of that.

If I tried to describe every one of the works here, this review would be overly long so I'll simply mention one other which resonated with me, "Torching the Dusties". It portrays a timely issue, the resentment felt by some younger adults towards the older generation who - in their opinion - "messed it up" for the next generation, killing the planet with greed and blindness to their impact on the environment. The younger adults feel cheated and are outraged, determined to do something about it. Again, I won't reveal more details about what happens next. I hate reviews with spoilers.

I hope this review perks your interest and if you've never been a fan of Atwood that you consider revisiting her writing by reading "Stone Mattress." I'd be interested in other readers" take on it. I received a free copy of this for review but was a bit reluctant to dive into an Atwood book. I'm glad I dove into this one.

Margaret Atwood writes exposition brilliantly. Unfortunately
By Amazon Customer
Margaret Atwood writes exposition brilliantly. Unfortunately, that's all this book is - endless exposition. There are 9 short stories in which almost nothing happens. The only one I enjoyed was The Dead Hand Loves You, but I almost didn't make it that far. This would be a great assigned book for a writing class, but in terms of enjoyment, I rate it low.

Atwood writes with a message and she makes her point, that doesn't mean that she is always fun to read.

The Iron Redskin: The History of the Indian Motorcycle, by Harry V. Sucher

Indian is a magic name in motorcycling. Its mention brings to mind machines with flamboyant bold striping, lithe of appearance and, seemingly even at rest, poised for flight. There were over two dozen makes of motorcycle on the market during the heyday of motorcycling in the United States. Yet in the minds of many enthusiasts, none of these quite approached the verve, style, artistic functionality of design or handling abilities of the Indian.   The Iron Redskin is the story of the most loved of American motorcycles. It is a vast work that has taken many thousands of hours to compile, yet it is one of the most readable and interesting motorcycle histories ever to be published.

About the Author
Harry Sucher’s fascination with Indians began with a ride on a friend’s Powerplus in 1921. He owned various models, assembling a large collection of antique machines, which in turn led to intensive research into Indian’s complex history. He has spent a lifetime researching and studying motorcycles and the people who helped shape the sport in this country. He started collecting data as a young boy, when many of the motorcycle pioneers were available for personal interviews. Throughout his life, many of the original people assisted him in preparing original manuscripts, thus insuring historical accuracy for years to come.  Harry Sucher lives in California.

Great Book!
By Pullus ex Machina
This book has the right balance of story and photos. There is plenty of information included for those with more than a passing interest in the Indian Motorcycle Company past and present. However, if you just like skimming through a coffee table book and picking up bits and pieces while you ogle the glossy images... this book provides for you as well. If you like history and motorcycles even a little bit, this is a worthwhile read.

Although there are some factual errors there is also a lot of good material in this book, and I'd say it's an essential part of any true Indian enthusiasts library.

Review
Beyond the meticulous pacing, the thorough character work, and the staggering ambition and revelations of the narration, Jemisin is telling a story of our present, our failures, our actions in the face of repeated trauma, our responses to the heat and pressure of our times. Her accomplishment in this series is tremendous. It pole-vaults over the expectations I had for what epic fantasy should be and stands in magnificent testimony to what it could be."―NPR on The Obelisk Gate

"Jemisin builds off of the strong foundation laid in The Fifth Season ... an interesting new series."
―Booklist on The Obelisk Gate

"Exceptional."―Library Journal (starred review) on The Obelisk Gate

"Stunning.... Jemisin's most accomplished series yet."―RT Book Reviews on The Obelisk Gate

"Intricate and extraordinary."―New York Times on The Fifth Season

"[The Fifth Season is] an ambitious book, with a shifting point of view, and a protagonist whose full complexity doesn't become apparent till toward the end ... Jemisin's work itself is part of a slow but definite change in sci-fi and fantasy."―Guardian on The Fifth Season

"Astounding... Jemisin maintains a gripping voice and an emotional core that not only carries the story through its complicated setting, but sets things up for even more staggering revelations to come."―NPR Books on The Fifth Season

"Jemisin's graceful prose and gritty setting provide the perfect backdrop for this fascinating tale of determined characters fighting to save a doomed world."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on The Fifth Season

"A must-buy...breaks uncharted ground."―Library Journal (starred review) on The Fifth Season

"Jemisin might just be the best world builder out there right now.... [She] is a master at what she does."―RT Book Reviews (Top Pick!) on The Fifth Season

"[A] powerful, epic novel of discovery, pain, and heartbreak."―SFF World on The Fifth Season

"This is an intense, exciting novel, where survival is always on the line, set in a fascinating, original and dangerous world with an intriguing mystery at the heart of it. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!"―Martha Wells on The Fifth Season

"Stunning and well constructed ... a book that imbues itself with deeper meaning the more it unfolds and reveals itself, and by the end, I saw everything in a new light. I knew Jemisin was talented, being a huge fan of her Inheritance and Dreamblood books, but here she employs heretofore unseen skills."―Lightspeed on The Fifth Season

"One of the most celebrated new voices in epic fantasy."―Salon.com

"With every new work, Jemisin's ability to build worlds and break hearts only grows."―Kirkus (starred review)

"Heartbreaking, wholly unexpected, and technically virtuosic, The Fifth Season is a tour-de-force. I felt every shock--and the book is packed with them--in my marrow. It's no exaggeration to say that Jemisin expands the range of what great fantasy can be."―Brian Staveley, author of The Emperor's Blades

"[How] can something as large and complex as this story exist in her head, and how does she manage to tell it to me so beautifully? I can't stand how much I love The Broken Earth trilogy so far.... Absolutely dazzling."―B&N Reviews on The Obelisk Gate

An amazing sequel to The Fifth Season.
By Amazon Customer
If you've read the Fifth Season, you have been waiting on pins and needles for this sequel. If you haven't read The Fifth Season, go do that NOW. Don't worry, we'll wait.

The Obelisk Gate further develops the world we began to see int he first book. We learn more about the Fulcrum, the Guardians, the obelisks--and even more importantly--about the lives and motivations of characters we have come to love/hate/fear. Essun, as a woman in her mid forties is not your average protagonist. But she is someone who feels a million times more human and relatable than the cardboard cut out perfect princesses of urban fantasy. She is both powerful and humble, kind and cruel, she makes mistakes and has victories. She is in short, a person. And you can feel her blood, sweat and fears throughout the novel.

We finally get to meet Nassun, and understand what is like to be the daughter of such a strong and damaged woman like Essun. We learn more about Hoa. And the dark adversary that Alabaster fights is finally revealed.

This is not a novel that suffers from Second Book Syndrome. So much happens and yet nothing feels rushed. Another brilliant entry into an epic and unforgettable series.

What the hell am I supposed to do with myself until the next book is released?

Just as complex as The Fifth Season while expanding on its world and characters
By ViolettePen
The sequel to the Hugo Award winning The Fifth Season, N.K. Jemisin's The Obelisk Gate returns to the Stillness as the aftermath of its latest natural disaster takes hold. Essun, the earth-manipulating orogene from TFS, has chosen to stay in the settlement of Castrima to help them with (for lack of a better word) "doomsday preparations" and to train with her former mentor Alabaster Tenring. What is Alabaster's mission for her? A staggering feat that, if successful, could seal the fate of their world. Meanwhile, Essun's 10-year-old daughter Nassun, who was kidnapped in TFS, journeys with her volatile father to a community rumored to "cleanse" orogenes of their powers. Yet Nassun's gifts rapidly mature, and she learns to use them in unimaginable ways - with consequences that could weigh just as heavy as those from her mother's task.

I'm sure that summary will confuse people who haven't read this series yet. But it's difficult to say more without revealing too much of The Obelisk Gate's incredible world-building and the story itself. We learn much more about the Stillness, especially the obelisks and the stone eaters. Questions that were posed during TFS are answered, and more mysteries arise. There were also moments when I ached for Essun, Nassun, Alabaster, and Essun's stone-eater friend Hoa. (That Hoa scene in particular nearly made me cry.) All the emotional investment and immersion made The Obelisk Gate impossible to put down - and when I was forced to put it down, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Normally I'd use this space for criticisms... But I have none. Sure, The Obelisk Gate is intricate in its plotting and unorthodox in structure (e.g., Jemisin still uses second-person narration for Essun's chapters). But after reading TFS and other novels by Jemisin over the past year, I've learned she has reasons for her unconventional choices - and those reasons always reveal themselves in time. So I sat back, absorbed each chapter's events and the characters' choices, and let my speculations percolate. And based on The Obelisk Gate's climax... Oh my word. The Broken Earth is shaping up to be an outstanding trilogy, and I'm so nervous-yet-scared-to-death for its finale next year. Fantasy readers who haven't started this series need to get on it - but make sure you start with The Fifth Season, because The Obelisk Gate won't make sense otherwise.

Epic Storytelling!
By Nick Sanders
Once in a great long while a story transcends narrative form and structure, tropes and popular trends, and breaks new ground -- and does so with style. This is one of those times. I'd like to compare the worldbuilding and deeply complex backstory to The Lord of the Rings, but I can't because we are all 100 years beyond Tolkien and those 100 years make a difference. I'd like to compare the overlay between fantasy and science fiction found in this book to Wolfe's The Urth of the New Sun saga, but I can't because Wolfe's storytelling was detached and Jemisin brings a morality, a righteous anger, to her narrative. To be clear: after two volumes I'm pretty sure this trilogy is going to be talked about in comparison to those works, and others. It's that good.

I spent most of Volume I trying to understand the cast of characters and how their stories interacted with each other. In Volume 2 their stories continue and Jemisin introduces new characters and continues to surprise the reader with new insights into characters we thought we'd already figured out. The scope of the story is starting to become clear ... and the scope is huge. The stage is far bigger than we first thought and we are still not exactly sure who's on which side ... though the sides are becoming more clear.

I did not find these two books to be easy reads. I spent a lot of time moving back and forth, re-reading paragraphs and chapters as I learned new insights. It is not an easy read; but it's a very very rewarding one.

Very good read. This was my 2nd time reading it. The first was when the book originally was published. It's still as good now, as it was then, but even more relevant now.
