The right mix of what to do and why

Some background on my point of view for this review. I'm in my 40's and am a lifetime runner who's gone in and out of competitive modes over the years. I'm back in that mode now and have finally admitted to myself that nutrition matters, and I should probably do something about it - not only for racing but for general healthy living.

A statement early on in the book immediately grabbed my attention, and that is that the book is not a diet book for the sole purpose of losing weight. It's a book about how to adjust your eating habits to get to your ideal racing weight for the purpose of maximizing your performance. A very important distinction to me.

There were two main ideas I found very useful about the book. The first was in how the author presents a method for generally assessing the quality of your diet. The second was that he provides guidelines on how much of what category of food to eat based on the unique needs of endurance athletes. The best part is that he doesn't get too specific (Day 1, Meal 1: eat this, etc.), but allows you to choose whatever you want as long as you're adhering to the guidelines.

After reading the book, I went through my kitchen and catalogued the nutritional values of everything I had been eating. I compared the results with what I should be eating, and then was able to make some adjustments to get things in the proper balance. It was a process that took the better part of a weekend day, but very informative and productive in the end.

I'm less than a month into the changes, but I have dropped a few pounds, am completing my workouts at a higher level, and recovering well between workouts.

If you recognize the importance of proper nutrition for race performance and are willing to make a change in your eating habits, I highly recommend this book.

Wish I could give this 10 stars!

I'm a 46 yo female cyclist, 5 ft 3 and had 15 lbs to shed. I wanted to get back into amateur bike racing after 3 years off due to job changes and a series of knee injuries. I kept coming back to this book because of the positive reviews. I'm glad I did! Excellent program and I have already recommended to several of my biking friends.

After 4 weeks on the program I have dropped 10 pounds and feel MUCH stronger on the bike. I've also lost most of my desire for sweets and other junk food - the eating plan the author lays out is very satisfying and easy to follow (besides being super-healthy). It turned out I was seriously undercutting my calorie and carb needs as a lot of women do - I was training 10 hours a week on the bike and eating 1300 calories/day (with few carbs) and not losing weight. And I was getting seriously tired and frustrated. I decided to follow the Racing Weight plan (and the high-volume cyclist training plan in the Quick Start guide) since nothing else seemed to be working. I cleaned up my eating, added in another ~600 cal a day (mostly high quality carbs), and trained a little differently (added HIIT but kept hours on the bike the same). Wow, what a difference and after only 4 weeks!

I'm going to follow the plan through week 6 (at least) and possibly week 8 to see where that takes my weight. As the author states in the book, my best racing weight may actually be a bit lower than what I had thought.

My only wish - that the author would create additional training plans for cyclists as he has for runners. His Quick Start plan has worked so well that I'd like to continue using one of his plans after my 8 week weight loss cycle!

This book is helpful but incomplete

I just finished reading this book, and while I do like the general concept of the book, I did not like that the author gives incomplete information with the hope of cross selling his other books, telling you that you can buy his other book to get the detailed diet of the generalities he explains in this book
Also I felt that the book is incomplete in the help you receive with the DQS scoring by food type, where foods are assigned points by type and frequency of consumption during the day, a twist on the weight watchers system where food is also assigned points, but weight watchers gives you many pages listing foods and their points, here you get a guideline where you must categorize all food in seven types and a very small sample of foods and their score, but there are dozens of food I eat I am still unsure how to grade after reading the book, and I get the impression under his system 100% Natural Honey woud be graded to be the same as a Milkey Way Chocolate.
He provides the diet for some endurance athletes but he fails to grade them under the DQS system, that could also be good practice for people starting with his system.
So now I feel that unless I buy the quickstart guide, and his upcoming cookbook I will not be fully able to benefit from this book.

About the Author
Magdalena Droste studied art history and literature in Aachen and Marburg. She has worked at the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin since 1980 and is professor of art history at the BTU Cottbus since 1997. Droste has contributed to numerous exhibitions and publications on Bauhaus artists, besides writing a number of essays on the furniture and textile workshops at the Bauhaus and on arts and crafts as a women’s profession.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several architecture titles in the Basic Art Series.

While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.

This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.

Its an amazing read.

Great little guide

I'm just getting into exploring our local wild mushrooms and this is and handy guide with clear pictures and good identification. It is a FIELD guide (easy to put into a backpack and carry), not a "pocket guide". But the hefty amount of information on mushrooms for those looking to learn is significant - so I'd recommend this book as your "walk-around" guide.
There are some changes I'd like to see. 1) The photos are great but having small insets on variations would be great. 2) Taking a cue from "Dummies" books, having more "shorthand" references would be great. For example, they have an x in a circle by the photos of mushrooms known to be poisonous or hallucinogenic. It would be great to have other symbols for edible or medicinal. It would also be great to have symbols that indicate the type of environment and range where the mushroom is usually found and in what season(s). Maybe they can make an app for that!
Other than that, this book is extremely useful and chock-a-block full of information - both on specific types of mushroom and mushrooms in general. It is also well organized and easy to use.

Great pix, almost too nice to take in the field.

I'm gonna admit right now I'm a total shroom newb. Just getting into the subject. I got this basically because I wanted pictures, and I was hoping the NAS name was still reliable.

I read other reviews before I bought it, and I'm not too fussed if they used "fake" names, since I wouldn't know the difference. As long as the names on the pix match the text I'm good, and the ones I spot checked did. I don't plan on getting involved in any clubs or anything.

The pix are great,very clear and it worked for me tryin to find out what the ones in my back yard are. I actually took to their 'thumb guide' pretty well, so I like that. (They put the pix in groups and gave page ranges for each group, identified by a little icon unique to each) It's bound quite nicely, but all that means for me is I'm gonna feel bad when I get it messed up trying to use it on our next camping trip. Would be great in someone's library tho, so some might call it a plus.

A trly superlative field guide

I own three mushroom field guides now and if I had to choose only one it would definitely be this one. This field guide has 762 well photographed and very nicely printed pictures of 703 species of mushrooms and has a sturdy faux leather plastic cover although the pages are not waterproof so don't expose this book to rain. It has a section addressing poisonous mushrooms and another on edible mushrooms as well as a pore print chart which is invaluable. hallucinogenic mushrooms are addressed individually. Each mushroom has at least one full color photograph that is linked to a short description of the mushroom, its identifying features, its habitat and its edibility if applicable.

The organization of this book is brilliant. I'm sure scientists would be almost driven to group species of mushrooms together regardless of appearance but this guide helps one find the description of a mushroom by appearance. The photos are divided into 14 classes based on typical shapes and then the photo page numbers are linked to the shapes. Amanita mushrooms have several different distinctive shapes so each shape has it's own section. Polypores are another example and have three sections, one that deals with polypores that are shaped like typical mshrooms, one section that deals with stalked polypores that are less regularly shaped and another that deals with shelf like or bracket type polypores and other shelflike fungi. It sounds complex but isn't generally all that difficult.One can also work the other way and use the index to look up a fungus by name.

There's literally a ton of valuable and interesting information crammed into this book and it's a great learning tool on its own..

My Review on "The Nazi Hunters"

This is coming from a some what knowledgable 11 year old girl, but I absolutely LOVED this book. I have always been fascinated with WWII and I finally found another book about it. I really like how it explains the capture of the less famous, but much more evil of a person, Adolf Eichmann, who I never knew existed. I also cannot believe how he stayed in hiding for 15 years until his capture. This book was a SMASHING read. I thought there was not a single part of the book that was boring or not interesting. I kept turning the pages on my iPad to see what would happen next. I can tell you, I really enjoyed this book and if you are interested in WWII and want a good book to read about it, choose this book to read. I highly recommend this book! I would also like to say thank you for writing it!

Middle School Readers will not be able to put this down!

Neal Bascomb has written a gripping account of an international effort to capture Adolf Eichmann – the SS official who basically visualized, organized, and ran the Holocaust. Eichman disappeared for over a decade and, while Europe and the U.S. got caught up in the Cold War, a tenacious few kept hunting for ex-Nazi officials who were responsible for the murder of millions of Jews and others. In a spy-like, action packed text, the author tells the story of how Eichman was discovered in Argentina, kept under surveillance and then captured through an elaborate plan by an international team led by the Israelis.

What struck me were some of the thematic threads that ran through the book -

Everyone involved (and there were dozens) had lost a relative in the Holocaust and was still suffering the loss (why wouldn’t they be?) – this served as motivation, but also as an energy that sometimes had to be suppressed in order to pull off the mission successfully;
Even when world powers like the U.S., Europe, and even Germany lost focus on pursuing these criminals, a tenacious few – a lawyer in Germany, leaders in Israel, every day people in Argentina including a teenage girl – continued this pursuit.
To pull off this mission, meticulous care had to be taken as well as innovation – disguise, caution, use of new technology, etc. As well, collective thinking and collaboration and trust played an important role in the mission.

Beautiful. Well written and thoroughly researched. Actually, I found this in a bookstore and had not heard of Neal Bascomb. I immediately turned to the author’s note to check out his research and was impressed enough to pay. While the notes and research were extensive, Bascomb writes the following note: “Now, despite my best efforts, my reconstruction of these events is no doubt imperfect” and then he goes on to explain. Great example for your middle school students to consider in thinking critically about the informational texts they are reading.

A much needed anthology about the experience of South Asian women in America. This is the book I wish I had gotten to read when I was 12 and newly arrived in the country. The authors have attempted to integrate as much clinical information as possible to highlight important concepts and illustrate complicated ideas. The book is stylistically pleasing and easy on the eyes, which is welcome. The graphs, diagrams, and tables add to the discussion and provide a comfortable break from the reading. Doody's Review

About the Author
John Geddes is an Ottawa writer and journalist. Born in Shawville, Quebec, he grew up in Cochenour, a small mining town in northern Ontario. He has served as "Maclean's" magazine's bureau chief on Parliament Hill since 2000, and was a 2003 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He lives in Ottawa with his wife and daughter.
