A review for laypeople
By Jon L Albee
This is a vast medical reference book, written in technical language for practicing clinicians. That, of course, does not mean that it can't be endlessly fascinating and useful for so-called "laypeople" as well.

Always wanted to be a doctor? Grades were never good enough? Couldn't afford it? Not to worry. This book is the wannabe physician's dream, and the hypochondriac's worst nightmare. It covers the entire range of human illness and injury, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. No other medical reference book comes close to its exhaustive coverage and scientific excellence. Potential readers should keep in mind that this book is NOT a drug reference, but a manual for general clinical practice. If you want to know the infinite details about your favorite pills, you'll need the Physician's Desk Reference as well.

The book has thousands of tissue-paper thin pages, all filled with text. There are no photographs, few graphics of any kind, and only a few tables. It's a massive encyclopedia. For the curious and well-informed layperson, I recommend this book over the watered-down home version. It's not that the home version is "dumbed down." It isn't, but the real thing is far more scientifically penetrating in analysis, cause and treatment options. The technical language can be a bit daunting without a good medical dictionary (or an M.D. or D.O. degree), but once you learn a few recurring terms you'll find this book to be the best self-doctoring tool you've ever put your hands on. The only thing you won't be able to do is write your own prescriptions! Your doctor will just HATE you for it.

New editions of the Merck Manual come around every six years or so, and sometimes it takes as long as ten, so this edition will be current for at least another five years. I know it sounds perverted, but I bought this book because I enjoy the science behind it. I read it just to learn new fascinating things about the wonderful field of medicine, and you can too! If anything, you'll appreciate how brilliant your medical professionals are.

Merck Manual
By S. Falcone
The manual is divided by the human body system (i.e. derm, neuro, muscle, etc.). This is both good and bad. Good if you know what system is causing the problem, but not good if you're not sure. I have a biology background so I thought I'd be able to understand a lot of it, but it is quite technical in the verbiage. It's better than the internet because it describes the rarity or commonness of the disease/ailment, which if you've ever googled an ailment you know how scary that can be! It is succinct and not dramatic. I can definitely relate to why doctors seem so calm, because the technical side is very matter-of-fact. Overall, I'm glad I own it and would recommend it; however, I will definitely supplement it with other medical books.

From Library Journal
Fans of Britain's first woman prime minister may have already purchased this fact-filled but ultimately self-serving memoir. Key events of Thatcher's 11-year reign--the alliance with Reagan, the Falklands/Malvinas War, the 1984-1985 miners' strike, conflict within the European Community, and so on--are described in exhaustive detail. There is little attempt to provide a balanced or subtle portrait of a controversial administration. Although, for the most part, the book's prose style is rather pedantic, Thatcher's unique personality nevertheless shines through. The gist of her approach is conveyed in the chapter titles--"The World Turned Right Side Up," "Disarming the Left," "No Time To Go Wobbly." Yet even Thatcher's harshest critics will find this book informative and revealing. The book contains over 50 photographs, some in color. A second volume, devoted to her life prior to the 1979 election that brought her to No. 10 Downing Street, is promised. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/93.

From Booklist
The Iron Lady tells all. Well, not exactly all; her memoirs reveal little of her personal life and, chronologically, cover only those years during which she was prime minister. Her book has already caused a stir in the U.K. and will be read with great enthusiasm on this side of the Atlantic not only by people involved in government, but also by general readers keen on foreign affairs. The first woman prime minister of Britain was never known for sugarcoating, and her remembrance of her 11-year tenure at No. 10 Downing Street is defined not only by its wealth of details about her activities as head of the government, but also by her unequivocal opinions about world-important events she participated in and history-changing individuals she encountered. Would we expect anything else but outspokenness from Thatcher as she reviews, analyzes, explains, and defends her policies and procedures, domestic and foreign, during her controversial presiding over Britain's disestablishment of socialism and resurgence as a world power? Highlights of her recollections include her comments on the Falklands War ("The significance . . . was enormous, both for Britain's self-confidence and for [its] standing in the world") and the reunification of Germany ("Germany is . . . by its very nature a destabilizing rather than a stabilizing force in Europe"). One has to admire her for her honesty, integrity, and stick-to-her-guns attitude. Brad Hooper

About the Author
In 1979 Margaret Thatcher became the first woman British Prime Minister. A decade later she became the first premier for 160 years to win three consecutive general elections. In 1990 she resigned her leadership of an increasingly divided and turbulent government. She is the only PM to have given her name to a branch of political philosophy, and arguably the most important figure in postwar British politics.

Remarkable Lady
By Elijah Chingosho
"The Downing Street Years" is an interesting, informative, enlightening and fascinating account of Margaret Thatcher as the Prime Minister of Great Britain for 11 years. Lady Thatcher was clearly a brilliant politician with a sharp intellect who has left an enduring legacy and indelible mark in British and world politics. Readers can get an insight on how she made certain decisions.

My political views are very different from hers but I greatly admire her achievements for Britain. She had the courage, perseverance and decisiveness to stand up for her beliefs and not just to please some people. Her rise to power in a male dominated society and Conservative Party is nothing short of remarkable. Things to her were in clear black or white, no grey areas, which generated either intense loyalty or deep seated dislike of the lady. She was truly an "Iron Lady".

In her memoirs, the reader will learn how she dealt with various significant events during her tenure in office such as the Falklands War, the USSR, the Miners Strike, and the privatization of nationalized industries, her encounters and opinions on various world leaders as well as how she won three elections (1979, 1983 and 1987). Her close friendship with Ronald Reagan played a significant role in the collapse of the USSR. She also reveals the challenges she often encountered in politics including betrayals and dealing with government officials steeped in bureaucracy.

This is excellent reading for executives and politicians of all political persuasions.

Daunting, but worth the effort.
By CJ
Mrs. Thatcher's memoirs of her decade-plus as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom are a very illuminating look at the 1980s, which were perhaps the most critical decade for Britain - and the rest of the Western world - since the Second World War. This is a massive, 800-plus page tome. But if you're interested in recent British history, or in the 1980s or the late Cold War, this book will reward your time and effort. Mrs. Thatcher may have been controversial - loved by many and hated by nearly as many - but one thing you can't accuse her of is failure to lead.

All of the important events of her tenure as PM are covered. Some of it is tedious - such as minute details about tax policies, for example. (Though these do, however, illustrate Mrs. Thatcher's impressive ability to understand the complexities of important issues.) But the wonderful thing about this book is that it's organized simultaneously chronologically and topically, which means you can skip over parts you're not interested in and go ahead to something else. (I admit I did this more than once.)

I particularly liked the parts dealing with the Falkland Islands War and those dealing with the Cold War. In the case of the former, I've read several military accounts of the conflict, but Mrs. Thatcher's detailed chronicling of the diplomatic aspects added greatly to my understanding of it. It was amazing how much the US, in the form of Secretary of State Al Haig, meddled in it to try to achieve "compromise," despite the fact that Argentina was clearly the aggressor.

The parts on the last phases of the Cold War were the strongest parts of the book. It's neat to get an insider's account of all the personalities and the diplomatic wrangling. Mrs. Thatcher was the Churchill of her time - she was instrumental in using real leadership skills to help hold together an alliance against aggressive dictatorships. The combination of her leadership with that of Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and Mikhail Gorbachev - the first Soviet leader who seemed to genuinely have good intentions, despite his continuing belief in communism - was a major factor in bringing about the end of the Cold War. I believe that as time goes by, Mrs. Thatcher will only be more vindicated, both for her contributions to the West's Cold War victory, and for starting the process of revitalizing Britain. (A former professor of mine who specialized in modern Britain and was - of course - a dedicated left-winger always gave Mrs. Thatcher a lot of credit for making some tough decisions that had positive long-term effects on the British economy; in fact, my professor even said that the prosperity Britain enjoyed in the `90s probably had more to do with Thatcher than with Blair. Coming from a leftist, that's saying something!)

Yes, this book is biased and one-sided; Mrs. Thatcher, atypically for a European leader, speaks (and writes) in a very straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is, here's-what-I-think-and-why-I'm-right fashion. (She almost seems like an American, with a habit like that!) But remember, these are memoirs. Memoirs, especially by former political leaders, are ALWAYS biased; they're not meant to be objective. Instead, they're meant to be one person's account, one person's case. If you keep that in mind, this is a very good book - huge and dense, perhaps, but worth the effort if the subject matter interests you.

Lover her or hate her, she was UNIQUE
By madmanxman
This first volume of memoirs by Margaret Thatcher frankly recalls the former British prime minister's dealings with U.S. presidents, the Falkland War, and her election victories in 1979, 1983 and 1987. She also details the back-stabbing and eye-gouging that the British call politics. It may be a little less corrupt than politics in some other countries I could name, but it sure ain't an arena for the feint of heart. There were never any gray areas with Thatcher. The British either worshipped the ground she walked on, or detested her every word. There was nothing in the middle, because Thatcher was not given to taken the middle course. 'There's nothing I like more than a lively discussion' she would say. What she meant, of course, was that she loved a damn good arguement! This first part of her autobiography is as outspoken as she was. She pulls no punches, and her unequivocal opinions about world events she participated in and world leaders she encountered leave you wondering how she survived eleven years as Britain's Prime Minister. But would we expect anything else from Thatcher as she explains and defends her controversial policies, which caused the dismemberment of socialism and Britain's resurgence as a world power after many years of liberal misrule.

Tango And The Political Economy Of Passion (Institutional Structures of Feeling), by Marta Savigliano

What is tango? Dance, music, and lyrics of course, but also a philosophy, a strategy, a commodity, even a disease. This book explores the politics of tango, tracing tango’s travels from the brothels of Buenos Aires to the cabarets of Paris and the shako dansu clubs of Tokyo. The author is an Argentinean political theorist and a dance professor at the University of California at Riverside. She uses her “tango tongue” to tell interwoven tales of sexuality, gender, race, class, and national identity. Along the way she unravels relations between machismo and colonialism, postmodernism and patriarchy, exoticism and commodification. In the end she arrives at a discourse on decolonization as intellectual “unlearning.”Marta Savigliano's voice is highly personal and political. Her account is at once about the exoticization of tango and about her own fate as a Third World woman intellectual. A few sentences from the preface are indicative: “Tango is my womb and my tongue, a trench where I can shelter and resist the colonial invitations to ‘universalism,’… a stubborn fatalist mood when technocrats and theorists offer optimistic and seriously revised versions of ‘alternatives’ for the Third World, an opportunistic metaphor to talk about myself and my stories as a success' of the civilization-development-colonization of América Latina, and a strategy to figure out through the history of the tango a hooked-up story of people like myself. Tango is my changing, resourceful source of identity. And because I am where I am—outside—tango hurts and comforts me: ‘Tango is a sad thought that can be danced.’”Savigliano employs the tools of ethnography, history, body-movement analysis, and political economy. Well illustrated with drawings and photos dating back to the 1880s, this book is highly readable, entertaining, and provocative. It is sure to be recognized as an important contribution in the fields of cultural studies, performance studies, decolonization, and women-of-color feminism.

Tanog dancers beware!
By A Customer
This book is basically unreadable. I tried several times to wade through it and eventually gave up. I am sure there are some valuable points here but they are under deep layers of academic self indulgence. Tango dancers beware! This book is more about political theory than the dance.

History of Tango Including Social and Emotional Aspects
By A Customer
Histories of the Argentine tango are often polemical. Questions of propriety, national identity and social position have colored and distorted the perceptions of both authors and readers. In this tradition, Marta E. Savigliano, Assistant Professor of dance history at the University of California, Riverside, explores the history of the Argentine Tango as a dance form using sex/gender, wealth/class and color/race categories.

As a woman, a feminist and a dancer of tango, Savigliano is willing to investigate aspects of the tango that both attract and disturb many people.
What is different and most provocative in Savigliano's history of the tango is her exploration of the sex-gender dynamics. Her description of tango includes its emotional context:

"As a powerful representation of male/female courtship, stressing the
tension involved in the process of seduction, the tango performance has
gone through several successive adjustments as it has been adopted and
legitimized by the upper classes and by Western hegemonic cultures."

Savigliano's legitimization road introduces us to upper-crust Argentine lads slumming in the brothels of Buenos Aires, takes us through left-bank Paris of the 1910s, explains romantic reinterpretations of tango as it became THE dance of the Argentine middle class by the 1940s. We even visit more recent Japanese tango revivals.

Is the tango a display of unequal male-female power relationships? Who seduces whom?

Savigliano speaks as someone who knows well the tango, notably the heart and soul and the passion-tension in the dance. She views the tango woman not as a victim, but as a co-conspirator. The follower may not lead the tango, but she often knows more about what's happening than the leader:

"Translated into tango choreographic terms, [Tango] lyrics suggest that
milonguitas could provoke the dance (call the attention of their target
through their glances, figure, and dancing abilities) and tempt the
class/race status quo into motion, but they would never lead or "mark"
(marcar) in the moment at which the special steps were performed.

So Savigliano's answer is that the follower provokes and teases, and maybe
controls the leader's heart and intentions, even while the leader is
choreographing the dance, in spite of the fact that the economic power relationship may be quite unequal.

There are not many English language histories of the tango, so Savigliano's effort is a welcome contribution. On the whole, the writing style is accessible for an intelligent reader, although sometimes the academic approach is over-stressed and other times it is too artistic or impressionable.

The strength of this book is that human emotions and the male-female dynamic of tango have been brought into its historical analysis. The tango dance is quite unusual in this regard because without the experience of dancing tango an armchair historian simply persuing primary-source material would miss some of the most important elements no matter how deep the investigation.

The Only Good Study of tango in English
By A_Reader_of_Great_Books
In response to the reviewer below - why a non-academic would bother to try and read a book containing the phrase "political economy of passion" in its title is beyond me. What did s/he think it would be like?

This is one of those books that is absolutely incredible for those with the formation to read it, and probably completely meaningless to those without: those who don't have a graduate education ought to be scared off by the title, as intended. Don't blame a book because you don''t happen to fall within its target audience: simply look for something that's more within your abilities.

About the Author
Entrepreneur for 30+ years in the food world as a bestselling author, chef and creator of delicious, decadent, healthful plant-based food, MIYOKO SCHINNER is dedicated to pleasing the omnivore’s palate in all of us. She refuses to give up on those who haven’t made the switch to plant-based foods and continues to offer progress through the senses, not just the intellect, using diverse avenues. These have included a restaurant and natural food company that distributed products nationwide and supplied cookies and pastries to United Airlines.

Inspiring the general public through her 5 cookbooks, including the best-selling and “groundbreaking” Artisan Vegan Cheese and the just-published The Homemade Vegan Pantry, Schinner also recognizes that not everyone will take up the cause in their own kitchens. To answer this call, in 2014, she launched an artisan vegan cheese company, Miyoko’s Kitchen, which set out to redefine the category of “cheese” with its unctuous, decadent, delicious flavors of handcrafted cheeses made from nuts. Miyoko’s Kitchen currently ships nationwide through ecommerce as well as regular distribution channels, and exports to Australia and Hong Kong.

No stranger to public speaking or media attention, Schinner also co-hosts the national cooking show Vegan Mashup, presents live at major events around the country, and is frequently featured in national and local media.

For the vegan who likes to cook
By Becky L. Duncan
This is not a "quick fix" book BUT - if you like slow food, homemade food or cooking from scratch (especially if it's easy) this is your book. Most of the recipes are straightforward and made with ingredients a vegan who likes to cook will have on hand.

So far, I've tried the almond milk and soy milk - both delicious, both easy but the resulting milks were quite different. I've tried the yogurt (I made mine with the chia seed variation) and it was really good - and easy! I don't normally like yogurt but I took some for lunch with berries and it was really good. I've also made the rejuvelac (and can't wait to use it to crank out some cheese) and the almond feta. The almond feta recipe alone is worth the cost of the book. It's SO GOOD! I haven't had dairy cheese in years and these cheese recipes are an excellent alternative. I also made the "Well crafted Mac and Cheese" - was really doubtful on this but it actually thickened up and tasted out-of-this-world good! I'll be keeping a jar of this mix on hand all the time for "junk food days" I don't have to feel guilty about later.

I'm looking forward to making the butter, the cheeses and the condensed soups to freeze ahead of time.

This is an amazing book - I've threatened to cook all the recipes in a book before but this time - I think I'm going to do it.

She couldn't make it easier!
By A. M. Thomas
I've become a vegan book hoarder and all of them are beautifully designed and interesting. But quite a few I rarely use because they have either light print - hard to read unless in the best of light - or dust covers that keep falling off and recipes/ingredients too complicated for every day cooking. The first thing I noticed about Miyoko's book was the print. With my eyesight that's important. Even the smallest print can be read in the worst light (which is often the time I'm cooking) and the lovely rustic photo is on the hard cover - no dust cover falling off or getting in the way. The recipes are uncomplicated and easy to follow from basic ketchup, creme fraiche, yuba bacon, unsausage, custard, baking mix, and much more. I didn't realize how easy it is to make your own staples, it's going to save me a ton of money and searching round the shops. Try finding yuba where I live (you won't.) It takes minutes to make and all you need is 4 cups of soy milk! Already I'm stocked with pancake mix, butter, crackers, pizza dough, ranch dressing and fresh (handmade) pasta. None were difficult to make. Tonight I'm going to try the italian meatballs - very interesting recipe. So far, I've not had to buy one ingredient - I've found them all in my usual vegan pantry stock. I couldn't be more delighted.

The Essential Guide to Making Delicious Vegan Staples - Wouldn't Be Without It!
By veganforest
This is the book you need to get started creating vegan staples. If I could choose only one book out of all of the books I purchased last year, this would be the book I would keep.

Miyoko's recipes are simple, require mostly standard ingredients, and create some of the most fantastic vegan food I have eaten to date. There is a reason that Miyoko's recipes for vegan cheese come out so good - she actually sells her vegan cheese online. With this book you can make your own ketchup, butter, unribs, unsteak, unchicken, vegan fish sauce, and teriyaki sauce! You can make vegan mozzarella that bakes, browns, and crisps up on a pizza. You can make vegan ice cream and vegan yogurt. You can make a roll of vegan chocolate chip cookie batter you can cut off pieces of and use as needed.

I am sharing pictures of a pizza I made with the vegan mozzarella cheese from this book, a pork chop I made using the Unpork recipe, and tofu red curry I made where the essential ingredient was Miyoko's vegan fish sauce.

There are specialty ingredients that certain recipes require and I would make sure to purchase the recommended ingredients and not attempt to substitute other ingredients that may seem similar. For instance, the liquid soy lecithin is essential to the Glorious Butterless Butter recipe. When tapioca is mentioned for the cheese recipes, you will need to use tapioca flour. For the fermented tofu liquid for the vegan fish sauce, purchase a bottle of fermented tofu from an Asian grocery store that appears clear - if the fermented tofu is darker or reddish, that means it has chilies in it, and you will not want to use that kind of fermented tofu for this recipe. I contacted Miyoko through her website and she was very helpful in clarifying what specific items were required and where to purchase them. She is incredibly kind and responsive.

When you are culturing your vegan cheese, I found it worked better when I waited the full two days for the cheese's ingredients to culture. If you want to start with a recipe that is a surefire hit, I would highly suggest the Unsteak recipe.

If you don't drink alcohol, for recipes that have mirin and wine incorporated, you can find mirin and non-alcoholic wines that have the majority of the alcohol removed. I used Honteri Mirin from the local Asian grocery store and Fre Alcohol Removed Merlot. While the book suggests to use mirin that only incorporates rice and koji (and this is the perfect choice if you do not have an alcohol free household), I found that the flavors were still there with the Honteri Mirin while the alcohol was not.

While you are using this book, you will notice that a number of recipes incorporate multiple variations. The cashew cream recipe page alone has additional recipes for bechamel, alfredo, and mushroom sauce. The Glorious Butterless Butter recipe has four variations you can try after trying the main recipe. I love how comprehensive this book is. After the recipe for flax seed egg whites, Miyoko includes recipes for flax seed omelets, frittata, and quiche. You can make ice cream or gelato or sorbet, homemade jam, mustard, and mayonnaise, bread, crackers and cakes - the list of different recipes this book incorporates can really stock your entire vegan pantry. There is even a recipe for cinnamon rolls. I made the ketchup recipe in about 5 minutes with ingredients I already had in my fridge and pantry. It was worlds better than the corn syrup based ketchup you can typically find at the store.

If you are a fan of seafood but are vegan and haven't found good recipes that incorporate the flavors you have been missing, Miyoko has a whole section of this book dedicated to vegan seafood. You can make vegan fish, crab cakes, chowder - even vegan fish sauce! The vegan fish sauce has to be my favorite addition to Thai dishes. It brings back all of the subtleties of flavor I missed in the dishes I used to love before I was vegan. It's so good that I will probably use it the next time I order Thai food takeout - there is nothing like having the essential flavors and nuances of Thai food on my palate again.

This book is absolutely the most comprehensive and detailed recipe guide I have found to vegan cooking. Miyoko knows vegan cooking and everything I have made using this book has been absolutely delectable. It would be the first book I would recommend to a friend who was newly vegan.
