This book is a good introductory book for strategic reading

This book is a good introductory book for strategic reading. I love the activities and suggested dialogue I can use to teach reading strategies to my first grade students. However, I was hoping for Tanny to go into the subject with a little more in depth. I guess I should have read the description more carefully--the book is incredibly thin! Like I said before, it's a great book to get a teacher, especially new teachers, started. What's helpful is that Tanny gives a list of suggested books for further reading at the end of each section.

Excellent teaching tools!

I loved this book! I devoured it on a camping trip--a place where I usually avoid work related reading--and found myself planning lessons and how I could incorporate these ideas and lessons into out mandated, less-than-stellar, curriculum. I did my first lesson, and the kids really enjoyed it. The concrete object lesson seemed to really resonate with them.

Book is missing a page!

The book I received is missing pages 105 and 106 from the chapter titled "Synthesizing." By the time I realized it was too late to return or exchange it. The information the book provides is very practical. I know for certain that I will use the strategies discussed in my classroom. However, I would like to get the book with the full amount of pages.

Probably a useful book just not for me

I am a student and I got this book to help me with pathologies and although it is helpful in some ways I didn't like it as much as other pathology books I got. I am a very visual learner and there are no pictures only descriptions.

Close, but no cigar. Missing helpful information

This handbook was recommended to my DMS class by an instructor, so I ordered it just before going into clinicals. I quickly found that I was using other sources to reference because I was not finding everything I needed here. My main problem with his reference handbook is that it does not give all of the measurements (WNL, abnormal, etc) for everything that we measure. For example, in my OB/GYN rotation (there is a specific OB/GYN section in the handbook), I couldn't find half of the measurements that I needed for dictation. My classmates agree.

As a sonographer, you are constantly reporting if something is abnormal or normal (especially when a radiologist asks on the spot) and you need a useful handbook to which you can quickly reference.

Excellent group of modern tropical architecture

This book is a wonderful collection of what is happening in tropical architecture. From the sleek Paraty House to the Open Pond Bay, different reactions to the challenges of the climates all under one cover. Great book for architecture fans. Thanks Raul, beautiful publication!

Beautiful Book That Taught Me A Lot

I loved this book. To me, it's the pure essence of green building. The book is divided by house, not by chapters, and covers the hows, whats, and whys behind the materials and styles the designers/architects decided to use. It made me think, and more importantly, it helped me understand why they did what they did with the materials available to them. I loved the the author explained the benefits of materials and site selection chosen. There are quite a few photographs to illustrate each case study - all of them beautiful. A great design book, with the added bonus of being a little trip around the tropics for the reader. I know I'll go through it again and again.

An absolutely gorgeous book. Stunning photography, clean and elegant graphics in keeping with the theme, and unbelievable houses in spectacular settings. The writing is smart, concise, and accessible--really makes you feel like you are there. A great armchair tour of some of the world's most beautiful tropical settings. A must!

Great book for kids and adults

This book was published in 1970. As a child 40 years ago I checked this book out from the local library and built most of the flying airplane models from the straightforward plans printed full size in the book. I recently bought the book used for the memories it evoked. This is also a great book for children of today who need a break from computers and other electronic devices. There is no experience comparable to building something from scratch and seeing it work, something which children and even some adults may need to learn. Go to any hobby shop and buy the balsa wood. The projects are mostly airplanes, but you can also build a boat, a car, a kite, etc. Highly recommended.

A great read, and I loved learning about emotions that I have had and didn't know they had a name for it. I now understand why I have been drawn to the French way of life, since I related to many of the French emotions like depaysement and brabant. Look them up. It's a refreshing read about emotions from a historians point of view instead of a philosopher or psychologist.

These two volumes puts the entire mining engineering discipline together in a comprehensive manner. Numerous mine managers and mining engineers have said that this is the best literature on mining engineering they have encountered. And it seems to be globally acknowledged as THE seminal source on a mining engineering overview.

But be warned: it is not light reading for just anyone, the technical details get quickly too much for anyone not intimately involved in the mining environment.

It gives comprehensive information about the business of mining, and even about the operations of mining, but perhaps not enough (to my liking) about the technology of mining. That being said, the work is a mighty one. The contributing authors and reviewers are exhaustive; the pages smack of expertise in the subjects; and the consistency of the writing style is remarkable (a feather in the cap for Darling).

These two volumes are certainly worth their price for anyone in the mining environment. I find myself opening them regularly to check or benchmark what we are busy with... if I can pry it away from my mining engineer colleagues. Highly recommended.

A great book!!

In this book, Dr. Thorne painstakingly explains what are the well-established science and what are the speculations behind the movie Interstellar.

The movie is very long, and contains a lot of things --- and in places it was a little bit puzzling. This book takes us back to the movie, and explains to us the many aspects of science that this movie touched on, including: the biology and geophysics behind the dooms-day scenario at the beginning of the movie, the astrophysics and gravitational physics of black holes, the science of planets, and the (very wild) scientific speculations on wormholes and quantum gravity.

I watched the movie together with a group of physicists and astronomers; afterwards, we had a lively debate about whether many details in the movie was really plausible, as Dr. Thorne had promised to us previously. After reading this book, I can see that Dr. Thorne had (of course!) realized most of the problems that we were debating. In places when astrophysics or planetary science were involved, Dr. Thorne provided the (sometimes very unlikely but nevertheless possible) scenarios that our difficulties might be resolved. In places involving speculations in fundamental gravitational and quantum physics, Dr. Thorne provided motivations from the frontiers of theoretical physics. It was great fun to read these details.

Finally, this book reveals the untold story in the movie: it all started from the detection of gravitational waves!!!

Those thinking the science in the movie is inaccurate really need to read this book!

The best thing about this movie, as far as I'm concerned, is that it was designed from the beginning to treat some of the most interesting effects of general relativity in an accurate manner, and to make these counterintuitive effects central to a compelling human story. That story may be unrealistic in many ways, as most interesting stories are, but everything that occurs in the movie is consistent with the laws of physics as far as we know them (the material at the end delves into very speculative issues, but it does so in ways that are inspired by serious work in quantum gravity).

The fact that the main features of the movie are scientifically realistic could come as quite a surprise to many viewers, and this book gives them the opportunity to take the next steps toward understanding this surprising and incredibly beautiful science.

The Science of Interstellar

The movie is very entertaining, and it left me curious to find out more about some of the scientific aspects. The movie was marketed as being based on "real science" - after watching the film, it's clear that it is not that simple. Some of the film (particularly the latter part of it) hinges on theories that have not been proven by any means; nor have they been disproven, so in some sense the film may be accurate to what some of our "best guesses" are when it comes to current science.

Kip Thorne, whose work on theoretical physics is featured in the film, authors this book. He elaborates on the science seen in the movie, and aims to increase the audience's understanding of the theories within. It's a well-written text that does a good job explaining things to an average reader. He includes a number of charts, diagrams, and illustrations which definitely helped me to understand some of the more difficult concepts.

I look forward to seeing the film again now that I have read the book; I think it will certainly allow my appreciation for the movie to grow.
