First off, let me say that you don't have to like sports to like this book. In fact... you can loathe sports. Dallas sure does. I grew up in Texas with a football coach as a father, and this book is about much more than a sport. It's about a way of life... one I didn't always fit into. Dallas and Carson both have plans for their lives, ones that don't include the quarterback dating the coach's daughter. But where love is concerned, things rarely go according to plan. "This is a bad idea, Stella."
Stella straightens her shirt. And by straighten, I mean she pulls it down to reveal what little cleavage she has (which is about twice as much as me).
"We're in college now," she says. "Bad ideas are the goal."
"Maybe it's your goal. You don't have a parent on the faculty. If this gets back to him--"
It's Friday night, our first on campus, and she stops just before the walkway of a frat house that hums with pent-up music. More than a head shorter than me, Stella reaches up and forces me to look at her.
"Okay, sister. Let's nip this in the bud right now. No one is telling anyone anything. There are like ten thousand people on this campus. You, my dear, are finally a small fish in a motherfucking ocean. Loosen up and enjoy it. This isn't high school anymore."
Could it really be that simple?
Loosening up has always been easy for Stella. Her mom is a bigger party animal than she is. She'll probably get a high five if we get caught. Me...well, I'm a little scared to think of how my dad would react. What little freedom I have would disappear faster than the hot water in my dorm on days that end in a y.
For one glorious month, I had entertained visions and fantasies of what college would be like. Rusk wasn't my ideal school, far from it, but it wassomething. I could finally make my own decisions and not have to worry about them migrating to the coach's office before lunchtime. I had ached for high school graduation day like there was a knife in my gut, and I couldn't pull it out until May. Then my dad was offered the open position here at Rusk, and I feel like I'm still gasping for breath around that knife.
Maybe we aren't in high school anymore. But it's the same damn misery with a different name.
Unless I do something about it.
But it's easier to be miserable, so I shake off Stella's grasp. "All it takes is one person to say something to someone, who tells some else, who mentions it at church or practice or anywhere, and I'm dead. Stick a fork in me and dip me in hot lava. Dead."
"God, you're so overdramatic. Sooner or later, you've got to stop being scared of your dad. If you don't, you're going to graduate college a virgin with half a dozen cats, some dumb-ass degree he wants that you couldn't care less about, and only professors and academic journals for friends."
I wince, because she's right about almost all of it. She would be furious if she knew I wasn't a virgin and didn't tell her. I'd always meant to, but it isn't exactly my proudest memory, and the longer I'd put it off, the easier it had become to pretend that it wasn't a thing. I refuse to let it be a thing. Instead, I roll my eyes and say, "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"Hey, I'm just being the voice of reason here."
"More like the devil on my shoulder."
"I accept that role." Stella cackles and nudges her elbow in my side like she's just said the funniest joke ever. And in spite of myself, I crack a smile.
I stare up at the Kappa Sig house. All the frat houses on campus are old colonial-style mansions with creeping ivy and pearly white columns. They look so presentable...probably in an effort to hide the absolute debauchery that happens inside.
God, I just thought the word debauchery. Stella's right. I am going to end up a lame cat lady, probably yelling at people from my front porch and waving my cane around like a madwoman.
It just isn't fair.
College is supposed to be a time to break free, to start fresh. You would think being the football coach's daughter would be a benefit. I know more about the sport than half the guys at our school, knowledge that should make it easy to land a date.
If they weren't all petrified of my father.
Or even worse...panting after him like he's bacon dipped in Nutella wrapped in more bacon. I could probably walk into this party wearing only my bra and underwear (slathered in some of that Nutella), and some idiot would bumble over, completely unaware, to ask me about my dad, what his plans were for the season, or how many high school state trophies we have lying around the house.
Stella's slim fingers snap in front of my face.
"Earth to Dallas. Are you actually frozen in fear right now?"
I roll my eyes, a habit of mine, especially around Stella. "I'm not afraid. I'm just...not optimistic."
"Don't tell me...you were brainstorming all the ways you could be a killjoy tonight."
I give her a playful shove. "I was contemplating covering myself in Nutella, actually."
"Now, that is what I like to hear! Ten points for creativity."

Cora's Trademark Humour & Endearingly Awkward Heroine!

THE STORY:
Dallas is trying so hard to find her own place in the world - most importantly separate from her father and football, that dominated her high school life. After having her heart broken by her ex boyfriend and star QB, she's sworn off footballers for life. After meeting and hitting it off with new guy, Carson, at a party Dallas thinks collage life in finally looking up, that is until she discovers Carson is on the football team.
Meanwhile, Carson can't believe that the quirky girl from the Rusk college party, is none other than the very off limits daughter of his new coach. With money being tight in his family, Carson is desperate to make the field in the coveted QB position to score a scholarship. And a girl, especially the coaches daughter, is a distraction he doesn't need.
Both have good reasons to avoid a relationship with each other, but the attraction between them is undeniable. Soon their reasons to stay away don't seem so important anymore.
THE CHARACTERS:
Dallas is such a relatable heroine. Some of her thoughts are things that we all think at times, but would never admit out loud - it was both hilarious and somewhat reassuring! At first Dallas was a little weak at standing up her father. She lets him make a lot of decisions about her life and it was great to see learn to take charge of her own future.
Carson, the deliciously sexy 2nd string QB was just perfect. He's tough, dedicated, with a kind heart and did I mention sexy as hell! He's extremely driven and has worked so hard to keep his spot on the team. And while he's not so strong in the academic side of things, I love that he still tries, it just highlighted his dedication.
THE ROMANCE:
The chemistry between Carson & Dallas was fantastic! From the first scene where they meet it's clear there are sparks - hot fiery sparks!! But they both have reasons to keep away from each other, and watching them try to deny their feelings just added to the sexual tension! Their romance was slow to build as the got to know and trust one another, which made it all the more sweet and sexy!
THE WRITING:
I love Cora's writing style, with her quirky sense of humour running through all of her books. Her heroines are always down to earth and extremely relatable. And with the perfect mix and sexy angst and hilarious'y embarrassing scenes, her books are always so much fun!
FINAL WORD:
With Cora's trademark humour and endearingly awkward heroine, All Lined Up is sure to be another winner!!

Let's go Wildcats!

All Lined Up is the first novel in a brand new series by Cora Carmack and wow, to use a baseball analogy; she really hit it out of the park! Yes, the book is about football, but you catch my drift.
Dallas is the only child to a single dad. Life was tough growing up a without a female influence in her home, she was always dropped off at one activity or another to keep her busy while her workaholic dad was at the “office”. Her dad is a well known, highly regarded football coach at the high school and university levels and all their household has ever known is football. Dallas has dreams of being a dancer, but due to her father’s tight grip, she’s attending Rusk University where her father is now the head coach. Rusk’s dance program leaves a lot to be desired, but what options does Dallas really have when dad is paying the bills and calling the shots?
Carson is a second string quarterback that just transferred to Rusk from a community college. Unlike most of the guys on the football team, he is a walk-on; he’s not getting any scholarship money of any kind and has to work his tail off not only on the field, but academically as well. His family’s ranch has taken a hit with the Texas drought so finances are tight, but they’re doing their best to help with his education. Carson can’t risk losing focus as he attempts to secure a scholarship for the next academic year; having a girlfriend or love interest would be all the distraction he would need.
I absolutely loved the character of Dallas. For once we have an honest, frank, strong female character that isn’t afraid to tell it like it is or stand by her convictions. She has trouble communicating with her father though and needs to figure out what she really wants to do with her life. With the help of Carson, and her equally sharp tongued best friend Stella, Dallas is able to turn her relationship with her father around and get over the mistrust she has in the opposite sex, football players to be specific. All Lined Up is truly a coming of age story that reveals the maturity and growth of an individual during a very important time in her life.
All Lined Up could have easily been another clichéd NA romance, but given Ms. Carmack’s background as a coach’s daughter, the narrative is authentic and speaks to the personal experiences she may have felt growing up. I literally devoured this book in one sitting, because once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. Like all of Ms. Carmack’s other works, it is well written; the characters have a depth that makes them believable and relatable, and the storyline feels genuine. This was a definite five star read for me and I am definitely looking forward to the next volume of the series! Carson is definitely swoon-worthy and I can’t wait to meet more of the team!

OK but mired in annoying cliches

2-1/2 stars: OK book but could have been so much better. I did finish it (I'm having a harder time finishing NA books these days) and it didn't irk me half to death. That said, it started with way too many cliches (the petite, snarky sidekick dragging the reluctant h to a boozy college frat party with a bunch of cliche player-type guys - the next book I read that starts out like this is being returned for a refund ASAP), the main characters were good but not great, some impediments to their happiness seemed silly and contrived, and I don't think the 1st Person POV (often a huge pet peeve of mine) with alternating viewpoints did the story any favors. I'm always trying to figure out if the person "speaking" is narrating, reminiscing in his/her head, writing a memoir or what. It particularly doesn't work with detailed dialogue (no one remembers such things) and love scenes, for me.
The epilogue comes suddenly and isn't satisfying. I also actively dislike the name "Carson" for an H and I long for a romance with an h who has an actual female name - those don't seem to exist anymore. It was not badly written and had minimal errors. Do I feel either main character was riveting? No. Would I read it again? No. Will I read the next one, "All Broke Down"? No! Not based on the excerpt at the end of this one. I don't like Silas and constant F-bombs.
