In the end, only the Voice remained.
I told you it would be better this way...
I was drifting, floating on something too silky to be water. It was warm, and it penetrated the deepest parts of me.
The Voice was right. It was always right. Everything finally felt soft. My sharpest edges were being worn away, melting into oblivion. I felt like candle wax before it cooled; nothing to do but let the remaining drops of consciousness slide down...
Pain. Where did that come from? How could I feel pain when I didn't have a body anymore?
My throat. It was my throat, being stabbed, or--
Shh...let it go. Let all the pain go. Rest easy...
For a moment I was comforted, the gentle motion of the not-quite-water lulling me, pulling me back to safety.
But I was heaving. Huge, uncontrollable spasms. And then I was vomiting, although that word isn't strong enough. I was erupting. The contents of my stomach spewed from my mouth, my nose. The wetness hit my chest, then my belly, and finally dribbled down my chin. My mouth tasted of charcoal. The warmth receded. The peace went with it. And I knew.

A new favorite!

After reading the synopsis of book 1, I went into what my friends would call a book obsession in overdrive. I just knew I had to read it. The premise was right up my alley and I couldn't get this book out of my head. It was haunting me.
I love the characters! The heroine Ember is so easy to like. There is just something about this girl that makes you care. She’s strong even if she herself doesn't know it and it’s refreshing. Too many times you have a strong female character that just oozes self-esteem and that can make it too hard for a reader to connect with the character. Ember was nothing like that, she had limitations and while she felt inadequate quite often it wasn't done in a whiny way. She just pushed herself to be better.
Taren. Right off the bat I loved his character. He was shrouded in mystery and you really don't know where he stands but I'm a sucker for those kinds of leading me. He had his moments, or rather I had moments where he made me angry but I always held out hope. His chemistry with Ember was tangible and sweet. And his caring for Callie usury proved how multidimensional he really was.
Kat. What's not too love about her. She's snarky, caring, tough as nails and loyal. She’s understanding to Ember's situation, a real friend to Taren but from what I see, it doesn't get in the way of her ability to do her job.
I loved the concept of this story and all the intricacies involved in the setting and plot.
Let this series take you into a new world! This was a solid read. Something I would happily recommend to readers who enjoy heroines like those written by Jana Oliver in her Demon Trapper's Series or Undertow by K.R. Conway.

Incredible series

This is my absolute favorite series, and I've read a ton of books!
This book is so much different than what you would normally read, the concept is really awesome.
The main characters are Ember and Taren. From the very bringing of book one, the story draws you in. This book has a sort of paranormal/psychological feel to it. As a psych major, I was naturally drawn to the series.
Each of the three books were very good, I truly believe each book got better because you get deeper into the story. There is not a single dull moment in either of the books. I envy the people reading this as a set because when I first read the books, I had to wait until the next book came out and there is quite the cliff hanger.
As I said, the books get better and better as you read but there are not words for how amazing the third book is. Book three is called Tether and it ties the entire series up nicely and really puts things into perspective. I was truly blown away by the depth in this book. Read for yourself and see how incredible this series is. You won't be sorry.

I read a fair amount of YA novels because they're fun, colorful and interesting. The Gateway Trilogy was hands down one of my favorite! I read the first book when it came out and I simply couldn't put it down. Author Christina Garner paints a vibrant world of love, intrigue, suspense and drama in a way that keeps you wanting more. With brilliant characters and a fast-paced storyline, this page-turner draws the reader in from the very first sentence and keeps you engaged and committed through all three books. I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to read something different in the YA genre.
